1. What is AMCOW?
AMCOW is the "African Ministers' Council on Water".
Its membership presently consists of all the African
Ministers from the African States who are responsible
for water resources.
2. When and where was AMCOW formed?
AMCOW was formally launched in Abuja, Nigeria on April
30, 2002. under the Chairmanship of H.E. Shehu Shagari,
Minister of Water Resources of the Federal Republic
of Nigeria.
3. What is the purpose of AMCOW?
The Mission of AMCOW is to provide political leadership,
policy direction and advocacy in the provision, use
and management of water resources for sustainable social
and economic development and maintenance of African
ecosystems and strengthen intergovernmental cooperation
to address the water and sanitation issues in Africa.
4. What are the major AMCOW achievements to
date?
The major AMCOW achievements include the following:
• Compilation of key water portfolios for the
five sub-regions of Africa
• Establishment of the African Water Facility
(AWF) which is hosted and managed by the African Development
Bank
he Rural Water and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI) for
Africa which targets attainment of 80% access to rural
water supply and sanitation by 2015.
• Water for African Cities (Phase II) which is
implemented UN-HABITAT in partnership with UNEP
• The European Water Resources Initiative (EUWI)
for Africa
• The German G8 Project for Water Resources Management
for Africa
• The African Ministers Initiative for Water,
Hygiene and Sanitation (AMIWASH)
• The African Water Journal which was launched
in December 2003
• Establishment of a Trust Fund under UNEP
